What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays in New Westminster, BC, are two common types of restorations used to restore loss of tooth structure. These are similar to fillings that can be used to fix cavities but are usually made outside the mouth and tend to be better fitting and stronger. Our dentists fit these custom-made restorations into the affected tooth. Once we evaluate your tooth, our dentists will choose either an inlay or onlay, depending on the degree and type of enamel loss.
An inlay is ideal when the cavity is contained within the grooves and has not extended beyond the cusps or tips of the tooth. When tooth loss is more extensive and extends beyond the tooth’s cusps or edges, we will place an onlay to restore the tooth. In the past, inlays and onlays were fabricated from gold or silver, but we now offer an aesthetic selection of tooth-coloured zirconia, porcelain or composite resin.
Steps for an Inlay or Onlay Procedure
Our patients do not have to be nervous about any pain or sensitivity during the procedure as we will administer a suitable local anesthetic before we begin. Once our dentists remove the decayed material and prepare the tooth to receive the restoration, we will either scan the tooth with an intraoral scanner or take precise impressions of the tooth to get your inlay or onlay fabricated.
At Asante Dental Centre, we can typically prepare the permanent inlay or onlay in our office using an in-house milling machine. Inlays and onlays near you are strong, durable and can last for many years with proper care.
