Dental Crowns in Vancouver

Crowns or caps are custom-made restorations that are used to protect and treat teeth damaged by excessive decays, cracks or fractures, or teeth that have previously had root canal treatment completed. Crowns are needed if teeth can not be fixed using fillings. If your teeth have been deemed unsuitable for other procedures or you have been told your tooth structure has been seriously undermined, you may need a crown.

The crown procedure consists of first preparing the tooth to create space for the crown to fit followed by taking an impression. The impression is then sent to a laboratory where your customized restoration is created. You will be provided with a temporary crown while this is occurring in order to ensure that the tooth remains protected. Once the proper crown is ready, it will be properly fitted in-clinic and then bonded into place.

Dental crowns are available in a variety of materials. The most common ones we use are full gold crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, and all porcelain crowns.

Gold Dental Crowns: Most suitable for patients who grind or clench their teeth or who have a strong bite, a gold crown will offer a stronger supporting structure and durability. It is also more suitable for restorations that are located in the less visible areas of the mouth (i.e. molars).

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns: This type of crown is another durable, strong option recommended for esthetic purposes. The drawbacks of this type of crown is that sometimes there may be grey metal showing at the gumline as your gums recede over time.

Ceramic Porcelain Crowns: This type of crown provides the most natural tooth-like appearance. its limitations are that it is not as strong as the other two types of crowns and is generally used on front teeth.
